Redneck Ethnic Cleansing Recalled
By James Bovard

February 10, 2015

Few things vanish from public memory more quickly than government atrocities. When I was growing up on a mountainside across from the Shenandoah National Park in the 1960s, no one spoke of the injustices committed against the mountaineers brutally expelled from their homes in the 1930s to create that park. Instead, all that mattered in Front Royal, Virginia, my nearby hometown and the northern entrance of the park, was that the tourists the park attracted were good for local business.

Now, almost 80 years after the park was opened, more attention is finally being paid to the redneck ethnic cleansing committed by both the state and federal government. “Shenandoah: A Story of Conservation and Betrayal,” by Sue Eisenfeld, a Johns Hopkins University writing instructor, beautifully captures the mountain people and the official vendetta that made them refugees from their own land.
The Shenandoah National Park was erected on a pyramid of lies. The original advocates claimed that the parkland was practically uninhabited — ignoring the 15,000 people residing within the originally proposed park boundaries. They claimed the land was undeveloped, near-virgin turf — despite its long history of timber harvesting, mining and beef cattle production. They also claimed the land was worth only a trifle of its actual value and thus would be cheap to acquire.

But the biggest deceits involved vilifying the mountaineers who inhabited what was then known as Virginia’s “Great Mountains.” Families had lived and worked on those ridges and hollows since the 1700s and flourishing communities dotted the landscape. But when they refused to vacate their land to satisfy a grand political vision, they were quickly tarred as know-nothing sociopaths.

Miriam Sizer, a social worker who reported to the commonwealth of Virginia, bemoaned that children in one hollow were “uncouth” and “tobacco-chewing.” National Park Service director Arno Cammerer derided some of the mountain residents as “scum.” Shenandoah National Park superintendent J.R. Lassiter denounced people living in the targeted area for suffering from a lack of “independence and resourcefulness.” But most of the mountaineers were doing just fine until they were plundered.

Families were paid as little as a dollar an acre for land worth ten times that much. Virginia’s ruling political machine was confident the new park would be a magnet for tourists, so it engineered a blanket condemnation. The land grab was spearheaded by William Carson, a wealthy businessman who orated that “there is no higher conception of duty than to feel we are of service to the State.” The government could have easily bought from willing sellers most of the land along the ridges and mountain crests where the Skyline Drive, the crown jewel of the park, was built. But politicians wanted vastly more land on both sides of the mountain range.

Shortly after taking office in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt visited a Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the future Shenandoah National Park. While a CCC bugler played “Happy Days Are Here Again,” CCC torchbearers ignited a large effigy labeled “fear” and “Old Man Depression.” FDR cheered: “That’s right, burn him up.”
A few years later, CCC members were sent to burn down the homes of mountaineers who refused to vacate their land — a chilling example of how FDR’s “freedom from fear” required giving federal agents unlimited power. The Hoover administration had promised that the vast majority of residents would not be required to vacate, but the Roosevelt administration reneged. When I often hiked the park’s trails and back areas as a Boy Scout, I did not realize that some of the standalone chimneys I saw were lonely reminders of the CCC vendetta.

In one case, an unsubmissive homeowner and filling station owner was ambushed by four plainclothes sheriffs and deputy sheriffs and dragged off. Ms. Eisenfeld relates how the victim, 62-year-old Melanchton Cliser, “stood proudly in handcuffs and delivered a ‘quavering rendition of the entire Star Spangled banner,’ then delivered a speech about defending his rights, guaranteed by the Magna Carta and the U.S. Constitution” before being wrestled into a sheriff’s car.
The Archdeaconry of the Blue Ridge complained of the inhumane “wholesale depopulation of the park area.” Many of the displaced people were relocated into what Ms. Eisenfeld calls “an internment camp of sorts.” “Resettlement” communities were set up with boxy white houses, many of which did not include running water or electricity. And the one certainty was that the new homes lacked the million-dollar views that their tenants previously relished.

The commandeering of 176,000 acres for the park provoked court battles that helped establish politicians’ right to seize private property for any purpose they proclaimed. In the subsequent decades, the same legal doctrines sanctified expelling more than a million urban residents from their homes. The dictatorial creation of the Shenandoah National Park is a warning that government cannot ravage property rights without ruining lives far and wide.

Government corruption in action.

Individual rights violated.

FDR doing evil.  He was on the wrong side of the issue.

All presidents must support individual rights.

It Is All About Jobs

with 3 comments

Unemployment is the United States remains high.  It is much higher than the official numbers.  The federal government LIES about the number of unemployed and total omits those under employed(part-time, temporary, lower job level).

If more people had jobs, the nation would be in a much better position economically.  This is true for individuals as well as the nation as a whole.

What has u-bam-a done about unemployment?

Absolutely nothing.

Some would disagree and mention the stimulus packages.  This is stupid.  Stimulus packages have never worked and never will.  All stimulus packages do is provide workfare(welfare disguised as make work jobs).

How can unemployment be reduced?

-Stop listening to politicians and economists; they know nothing.

-Go with the economy, it has a mind of its own; politicians can not control it.

-Make smart choices; not what you want, but what works.

Ask for help.  See

Trouble in America

with 2 comments

Only the blind and the stupid in American do not know that this once great nation is in grave trouble.  It is plainly visible in the rampant political and economic rot.

Most Americans feel trapped, they foresee their children’s fate as even worse off than they are, and they are justifiably angry.

Million of homes are in foreclosure, student loans are impossible to pay, the real unemployment rate is about 20%, prices are rising and then there is the danger of terrorism and harm to the environment.

The Clock Is Ticking for America to
Solve Its Problems

What’s the solution?

Everyone seems to know, but then…

Since both political parties are deeply involved with and beholden to the system, it would seem the answer is a third party independent candidate who not only comprehends the enormous dimension of our problems, but has the intelligence and courage to act to solve them, without regard to political ideology.

The current crop of political demigods running for office(including O-bam-a) do not understand what needs to be done.

Why would any sane and capable person want to be president?  Either the liberal media or the fanatical voter of both sides would pick them to death over ideology trash.

Each disaster(problem constantly reminds us, America does not have that much time left to solve its problems. The need is immediate and acute.

Reignite the American Dream

Too many newsletters, articles, and TV shows seem to be dedicated to the downfall of America (and the American Dream).

It’s time for someone to stand up for the hardworking men and women not just in America, but all over the world, who embody the hope of the American Dream.

Presidential Party Controls Congress

with 2 comments

Citizens/voters think that if they can elect their presidential candidate and gain total control of both houses of congress, everything will be great.  Since this seldom happens, they never get proof that it does not work that way.

Citizens/voters are emotional animals.  To them, it is all about ideology.  They have no intelligence. They are no better than wild animals.

It is past time for them to evolve.  Past time for them and past time for their nation.  Evolve into rational humans.  Rational humans except reality, deal in what works, not in fairy tale land.  This takes maturity.

YOU are one of these citizens/voters.

So, are you going to stay in denial; or are you going evolve for a better you and a better nation?

Presidential Mentality

with 3 comments

When elected, all presidents’ egos inflate to a size totally unimaginable.  They think that now they are president they are great and never wrong; that it is supposed to be their way or the highway.

This ego inflation is bad for the nation and a sign of lack of moral character in the presidents.

The reality is that they are fools elected by the foolish suckers(voters).

Most presidents are very average individuals with the skills of con men; the gift of gab.  They can get elected, but have little ability to run the nation.  They let their inflated egos get in the way and they lack the necessary mental abilities.  After all, they are politicians.

Once elected, the nation is stuck with them for four or eight years.

If they were not politicians, they would probably be in prison.

When is the nation going to start electing competent grown-ups?

Politics is America is all about ideology.  Ideology is a political view point.  It is the way that a political party views the world and how it is going to remake the world in that view.

Politicians are like preachers.  They hold services for the faithful.  At the same time they are trying to gain new converts.  They promise anything and everything to gain more members/voters.  Politicians belong to the church of illusion.

In the United States, there are two main ideologies; Republican and Democrat, or red states and blue states.

The goal of each ideology is to gain control of a level of government.  The grand prize is the Presidency of the United States.

It is like winning a sport’s championship.  It really does not mean anything.  It is for bragging rights.

The presidency should be more than this.  It should be about guiding the country through occasional troubles while forging a better nation.

Ideology has no place in the presidency.

The president in the news

leave a comment »

Whenever the president of the United States is in the news or in the media, it is either for public relations, campaigning or whining.

It is never about a significant accomplishment.  There are no significant accomplishments.

It is the president putting his “slant” on something.

It is “look at me, see me, I am great, I did a good thing, I am right, my opponents are wrong”, etc.

The television broadcasting companies interrupt regular programing so the president can have his regular whine.

Everything a president does is in one of two categories;  harmful or worthless.

It is all about getting re-elected or promoting his party.

When are the citizens/voters going to wake up and smell the disaster?

Is the economy getting better?  Is the real jobless rate(currently about 20%) going up or down?  Where is foreign policy going?  Crime, education, etc?
